Genetic Counsellor - Sonic Genetics

Refcode: Sonic Genetics R001

Apply before: 24/07/2020

Position type: Full - time

Location: Macquarie Park, NSW

The pathology division of Sonic Healthcare (Australia) consists of eight semi-autonomous pathology practices that provide services in every State and Territory. Sonic provides a range of genetic tests for heritable and somatic variants in the context of reproductive care, the diagnosis of Mendelian disorders, cancer care and genetic predisposition. Testing is provided by three of the practices on behalf of all member practices. Sonic Genetics is a central planning, education, clinical services and marketing agency in Sonic that is responsible for the national implementation and maintenance of genetic testing throughout the network.

As a pathology provider, Sonic Genetics does not usually undertake to provide clinical services. However, the comparative novelty and complexity of genetic testing raises specific issues of education and informed consent that some clinicians are unable or unwilling to address. This is compounded by a comparative lack of access to or awareness of genetic counsellors in the private sector. A major consideration for Sonic Genetics is increasing mechanisms for genetic testing to reach the wider population in a clinically responsible manner.

Sonic Genetics is seeking to appoint a genetic counsellor at 1 FTE to provide telehealth genetic counselling for a range of genetic tests currently offered through Sonic Genetics or in the pipeline, and to assist in delivering new models of genetic testing. The right individual will also strengthen the support Sonic Healthcare provides to its referring doctors by assisting in enquiries that are received as well as through education and presentations. This position has high visibility across Sonic and with our requestors and patients nationally. The role includes;

  • Providing genetic counselling as a professional service for a range of test options.
  • Supporting the provision of accurate and useful information through the Sonic Genetics Helpline, website, literature and education activities, such information being generic and not a patient-specific professional service.
  • Assisting in the development and ongoing maintenance of various tools for genetic counselling
  • Liaising with our contracted, independent practitioners, to ensure a seamless service through Sonic Genetics.
  • Triaging requests for testing to ensure all requirements are met before proceeding to testing.
  • Working with our testing laboratories for the provision of genetic testing.

To be considered for this position the applicant will need to have a Master of Genetic Counselling, or equivalent and be certified as a genetic counsellor by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia or board eligible to be certified as a genetic counsellor by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia.

The Genetic Counsellor reports to the Clinical Services Manager and will be supported to maintain an active role in providing genetic counselling as a professional service and maintaining certification, including ongoing professional development and engagement with supervision.
