Reproductive carrier screening (RCS) – New MBS rebates effective 1 November 2023

From 1 November 2023, Medicare rebates apply to reproductive carrier screening, covering cystic fibrosis (CF), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and fragile X syndrome (FXS).

  • MBS Item 73451 covers the initial screening of the female who is pregnant, or planning pregnancy
  • MBS Item 73452 covers the subsequent screening of the male reproductive partner for either CF or SMA, when detected in the female.

Please note, if couples choose to test simultaneously, only the female partner will be eligible for the Medicare rebate and an out-of-pocket fee of $385* will apply for the male partner.

Helping patients make informed decisions

We recognise that the most important discussion that couples will have regarding carrier screening will be with you. To support you and your patients, our online patient education course is available at patientedu.sonicpathology.com.au. The course covers the general principles of carrier screening and the different types of screening available through Sonic Genetics. This course is now also an RACGP- and ACRRM-accredited activity for doctors.

Arranging a test

Our Reproductive carrier screening request form has been updated, and is preferred for requesting; however, a standard pathology request form can also be used. Our genetic counselling service will continue to be offered, at no additional cost, for couples who have been identified as carriers of mutations which place them at high risk of having an affected child.

Should you require any further assistance, or would like copies of our supporting RCS resources, please do not hesitate to contact your local Liaison or Regional Manager. For further information or clinical support, please do not hesitate to contact our Genetic Pathologists on (02) 9855 5369 or visit sonicgenetics.com.au/rcsd
