Respiratory virus PCR to recommence

Monday 18 May 2020, 8:00

The COVID-19 pandemic created a sudden and urgent need for PCR testing, which could only be met by restricting the availability of other tests offered by our Molecular Biology Department.

We regret any inconvenience this has caused and are grateful for the cooperation of our referring clinicians during this time. That cooperation has allowed us to adjust workflow and stabilise testing platforms so that restrictions on PCR testing for respiratory viruses could be lifted.

Respiratory virus PCR to recommence from 18 May

We are pleased to advise that, from Monday 18 May, this will take effect. Respiratory virus PCR will be unrestricted from that date and will include SARS-CoV-2 (the cause of COVID-19), along with standard respiratory viruses, such as influenza, RSV etc.

All patients who have a valid pathology request form for respiratory virus and coronavirus testing will be required to arrange an appointment via our COVID-19 Hotline on 1800 026 622 (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–12pm).

Please do not hesitate to contact one of our Clinical Microbiologists on (02) 9855 5312, if you have any questions or wish to discuss the results of an individual patient.
